Question by pliedes: When do you think humans evolved their sense of humor?
What do you think brought it (sense of humor) about in the first place. What must have happened that was the source of the first laughs? I’ve thought about this question for a long time. I envision a few cave men and women sitting around a fire, in their cave, when suddenly, someone farts. They laugh and that’s where it all began. However, a humorous as flatulence is, I doubt that’s how our sense of humor began. What do you think?

I think humour may be pre-human, perhaps Cro-Magnon or even some earlier hominid race we all descended from had it. But I’ve heard that its been speculated that the evolutionary purpose of humour is that it was a peaceful version of control or dominance, which of course establishes some kind of order amongst the pack. Funny people generally seem to be higher on the pecking order or at least establishes some type of prominence, but nobody ever hates somebody for being funny. And we bear our teeth to laugh, which can be related to animals bearing their teeth when they are threatened, so perhaps its just its just some mutation of that behaviour.

By the way the farting thing is hilarious, and I do believe that scenario did play out multiple times in prehistoric human tribes, but that wasn’t the first time humour occured.
