Question by Tiger Tiger Burning Bright: How does one write well-written humor?
Bill Bryson, for example, is a fantastic and downright hilarious writer. I also want to try my hand at humor but I can’t seem to nail it. Are there any tricks of the trade? Thanks
Well, my humor is actually pretty sarcastic. I can’t just start making jokes like that, but when I do try, I can make people laugh.

Are you funny at all? Maybe try stand up comedy. You’ll learn about timing, structure, and what works. You could probably also use some of your jokes in your writing. I think timing, surprise, and noticing the humor in small things in life are most important.

Every Friday I embed a video in my blog (http://webdiversions.blogspot.com/) and I’m looking for video submissions. It could be anything: music video, short film, animation… humor, news… I prefer something that not everyone in the world has already seen. If it’s something you’ve made or features your band, art, whatever I’ll give you credit, include a link to your website/blog/whatever and mention any upcoming events you might have. I also need to be able to easily embed the video in my blog so stuff hosted on something like youtube is ideal.

So, post a link!

The "reveal" video explaining my Lego color-changing technique is now in production! Shot entirely on an iPhone, so that’ll give you an idea of the production values involved here. Just enjoyed a long hot day of filming, mostly under the hot lights of my Lego workshop, although I did manage to get outside at one point, for a nice horrorshow spot of the old "ultra-v"!

last week, after a long, frustrating day at work, i stopped by my storage place to pick up some Halloween decorations. as i’m locking up my storage unit, i see a trampoline in the adjacent field, just…there. nobody was moving it or storing it, in fact, absolutely nobody was around, at all.

do i dare? you bet your sweet bippy i do.

the video is sideways, as i didn’t realize how i was holding the camera while i was filming. i was having way too much fun, well, jumping. i don’t mind, i think it works.

oh, and that squeaking you hear is me giggling like crazy as i try not to land completely ass over elbows.

I recently read this excerpt from Media Matters, a media watchdog Organization… I would like your feedback:
During the May 23 edition of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly asserted that “[m]any Americans ages 18 to 24 have no idea what’s going on,” stating that they “get their news from [Comedy Central host] Jon Stewart and their point of view from bomb-throwing entertainers.” In fact, studies have shown that viewers of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart are consistently better informed about current events than consumers of other media, and Daily Show viewers are considerably better educated than viewers of The O’Reilly Factor. Further, consumers of Fox News in general have been found to be significantly more misinformed about current events than consumers of other mainstream media.
During the June 14 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Bill O’Reilly again baselessly attacked viewers of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, calling them “dopey college kids” who must be “stoned” to watch the program. In fact, as Media Matters for America has previously noted, a study by the Annenberg Public Policy Center indicates that Daily Show viewers are consistently better informed about current events than consumers of other media, while Nielsen Media Research statistics demonstrate that Daily Show viewers are more educated and affluent than the viewers of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor.

Responding to a segment on the June 13 broadcast of The Daily Show during which host Jon Stewart satirized O’Reilly’s recent trip to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, O’Reilly suggested that Abu Bakar Bashir — the extremist religious leader recently released from prison where he was serving time for his role in the 2002 Bali terrorist attacks — could “bunk with” Stewart “when he comes to the USA.” O’Reilly then characterized his own “program” as “serious” — as opposed to Stewart’s “comedy show” — and asserted that while being “a smart guy,” Stewart has taken to pandering to the “[d]opey college kids” who “are gonna watch him.”

Humor isn’t anywhere near universal, even within the same culture. Humor arises from the incongruity between what is expected and what is present – in other words, we expect one thing and get another.
As for synoptic pathways, an easier answer would be ‘which ones aren’t fired?’ and the answer is, ‘the ones dealing with direct sensory input’. The laugh itself is similar to a rapid-burst seizure, neurology-wise.

Question by Daniel: Why does humor exist?
Are there any books on the topic? I’ve read “Laughter: A Scientific Investigation” but that was more about laughter and not about humor. Please and thank you.
That doesn’t explain anything. Why are some things considered funny and other things aren’t? Why do some people think the sound of a toilet flushing is funny? Why that but not something such as the sound of a toilet seat going down? If you were a martin that had never experienced humor before, how would you be able to explain and predict when something you say would produce a smile as opposed to something else that wouldn’t?

Just saying “life would be boring without it” or “because it is funny” doesn’t explain anything.

well lets just take a moment to imagine the world without humor… I would be bored to tears going into depression then quickly driven to madness. It is a good coping mechanism too for when Morphy’s Law goes into effect.

Sides we get rid of humor then the world would be ran by the Sunday Squids… and we all know that would suck.

Day 18 (My New Addiction)

So its Day 18 whooooo making progress! But its Thursday and I’m freaking addicted to this game I just found out about called "Braid" I CANT STOP PLAYING!! Even when I get frustrated I keep coming back. It just looks so awesome and its FUN!

Its not 3D or multiplayer or has a bunch of controls it is a simple 2D sidescroller incorporating puzzles and problem solving and you can even rewind time and fast forward which play a HUUUUUGEEE part in the gameplay. and get this…its only …come on who doesnt have that? Hopefully this game doesnt keep me from doing Day 19 LOL!

Big Rocket Blastoff

We are heading out this weekend out to launch the Epic as a four-motor cluster and this Sledgehammer airframe on a bigger Aerotech M motor. So I thought I'd leave with the launch from earlier this May.

This is a 9 ft.-tall rocket with wings and a videocam onboard (with a wide-angle lens).

She lept to 350 MPH in 3.5 seconds per the on-board flight computers. Details on the M1500 propellant and more photos below.

And here's the video with the hearty roar from the ground, and then the view from the rocket.
