Question by Chris: NEEDS TO BE ANSWERED TODAY: What are the pros and cons of origami and kirigami?
What makes origami better than kirigami, and why? And what are some drawbacks of origami that makes kirigami better?

It’s for an article to write for school which was given today and needs to be in tomorrow, and I’m really stuck…

Any help would be appreciated, thank you! =)

For Origami you can take papers of any shape like squares, rectangles, hexagons, circles, and fold them into 3-dimensional shapes – these can be toys, but also works of art pleasing the eye. Some examples…

Modular Origami can be used to teach mathematical shapes like a menger’s sponge:

It is also used in science and in our daily lives – think “airbag” in a car for example. And in medicine: it has been proven that practicing Origami helps Alzheimer patients, and it also helps those with stiff joints.

Since Origami is known the world over, there are many national Origami organizations with local chapters which meet on a more or less regular basis (important: social interaction), they also have big annual conventions where several hundred people of all ages meet, usually with international guests and teachers

Drawbacks? None that I know of – except, once you get hooked, you’ll most likely always carry papers with you wherever you go, and that may cause some funny stares by people who don’t know why the heck you keep folding those strange shapes. But then again Origami lovers like to share their knowledge and a stare may start an interesting conversation.

Now about Kirigami: that is also known the world over, different countries have different names for it and may use different tools, but it always stays 2-dimensional unless it crosses the border to Origami – then it will turn into Origami (or Origamic) Architecture which during the past couple of years imho became a legit 3rd leg of Origami/Kirigami. Summary: I am a German user, and I am also an artist, as you may have guessed by now, I am very much into Origami and love to spread the knowledge about one of my favorite pastimes. If you use all the info I provided above, your teacher may be a little bit surprised, do not feel ashamed to show her/him where you got the information, because it only proves that you know how to do a good research…:-)
