Concert party, France, during World War I. This photograph shows a group of three soldiers dressed as women teasing another soldier in uniform. Their make-up and dress is exaggerated and intended to imitate provocative women. The caption shows that they are prepared for an entertainment to amuse the troops.

The name ‘Queeries’ in the context of men dressed as women reflects attitudes of the time which were intolerant of homosexuality. The way in which women are portrayed could be equally offensive to a modern eye.
